Baruch Spinoza was excommunicated from his Amsterdam Jewish community at 23 for his radical ideas. He ground lenses for a living and wrote philosophy of stunning originality: a single infinite substance (God or Nature), the illusion of free will, human emotions as natural forces subject to understanding, and the intellectual love of God as the highest human good. His Ethics remains one of the most systematic works in Western philosophy.
